Gi or no-gi?

Both are Brazilian jiu-jitsu: the art of controlling someone on the ground and making them tap without striking. The difference is what you wear. Most of our members do both.

Gi

The kimono game

  • Train in a jacket and trousers called a gi
  • Grips on the collar and sleeves slow things down
  • Great for learning patience, control and detail

No-gi

Shorts and a rash guard

  • Train in shorts and a fitted top
  • Faster and more scrambly, with fewer grips
  • Closest to wrestling and MMA grappling

Nervous? Good. Everyone was.

Every black belt was once a beginner who turned up anyway. Here is exactly what happens when you walk in.

  1. 01

    Pick a class

Adults start with Fundamentals or All levels. Kids and teens have their own classes by age: Little Rebels, Junior Rebels and Rebel Teens. Check the timetable and choose a time that suits.

  2. 02

    Arrive ten minutes early

Say hello, sign a quick waiver and meet your coach. We will show you where to change and where everything is.

  3. 03

    Wear something comfy

Sports kit with no zips or pockets is perfect for no-gi. Take off jewellery, trim your nails and bring water and flip-flops.

  4. 04

    Tap early, have fun

Tapping means stop, and everyone respects it. Nobody expects you to know anything yet. Just turn up and give it a go.

Questions?

Do I need to be fit before I start?

No. Grappling is how you get fit, not the entry fee. Go at your own pace and rest when you need to.

I have never done any martial arts. Is that a problem?

Not at all. Most people who walk in have never trained. Fundamentals classes are built for exactly that.

Is it safe?

Jiu-jitsu has no punches or kicks. You learn to control and submit, and you tap to stop at any time. Partners look after each other.

Am I too old, too big or too small?

Jiu-jitsu was built so smaller people could handle bigger ones. People start in their teens, forties and beyond.

What is the difference between gi and no-gi?

Gi classes are trained in a jacket and trousers with grips on the cloth. No-gi is shorts and a rash guard and plays a bit faster. Both are welcome on day one.
